Scholars, politicians and friends pay tribute to Ajulu

Scholars, politicians and friends on Friday paid tribute to the fallen political activist Prof Rok Ajulu in Kisumu.

During a requiem mass held at Aga Khan Hall in Kisumu, mourners from Kenya, South Africa, Ghana and other African countries described the Prof Ajulu as an outstanding individual who played a major role in the democracy Kenyans are enjoying.

Those who attended the mass include Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma, Siaya Senator James Orengo, former Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara, Law Society of Kenya president Isaac Okero and scholar Joe Ager.

Prof Ajulu died on December 26 2016 at Meulmed Hospital in Pretoria.

The political scientist is married to South African Cabinet Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, a daughter of anti-apartheid hero Walter Sisulu.

After being expelled from the University of Nairobi for protesting against Kanu excesses, he joined the University of Lesotho where he led a movement of African students against apartheid.

He later joined the African National Congress, and throughout his life considered his contribution to political thought an expression of the political activism he relished his all his life.

He will be buried on Saturday at Dajo Ka Ajulu, Sakwa, Kapiyo in Bondo where the Cord leader is expected to attend.
