Three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were killed and eight other injured in the Westgate shopping mall attack.

A statement by KDF Information Operations Officer Colonel Cyrus Oguna said 11 KDF soldiers sustained injuries and were admitted at Defence Forces Memorial.

“Regrettably, 3 of them succumbed to their injuries,” Col. Oguna said.

He said Chief of the Defence Forces, Gen (Dr) Julius Karangi has sent a message of condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and hailed them as part of our modern day heroes who have paid the ultimate price in the defence of their country.

Col. Oguna at the same time said KDF continue to undertake mop up operations inside the Westgate Mall building.

He said the delicate and complex nature of the mall siege rescue operation called for extreme care and caution to ensure the safety and security of the hostages.

“KDF approached this mission with the highest degree of professionalism. We wish to affirm that such cowardly acts of terrorism will not dampen KDF resolve to ensure that peace and stability is regained in Somalia and in the region,” he said.
