UN appoints resident coordinator for Kenya

The United Nations (UN) has appointed a resident coordinator of its activities in Kenya.

Mr Siddharth Chatterjee will now lead and coordinate 25 UN agencies based in the country. He will also serve as the resident representative of the United Nations Development Programme.

Mr Chatterjee had been the United Nations Population Fund's representative to Kenya until this appointment was done.

He joined the UN in Bosnia in 1997 and over the next two decades served in Iraq, South Sudan, Indonesia, Sudan, Somalia, Denmark, and Kenya.

His early career was in a special forces unit of the Indian Army, where he was decorated in 1995 for bravery by the President of India.

Ruth Kagia, senior advisor in the Kenyan president’s office, said Mr Chatterjee had played a major role in the health of Kenyans.

“Sid (Chatterjee)’s insightful understanding of clients’ needs as the population fund representative in Kenya has translated into tangible gains in maternal, child and adolescent health," she said. “His relentless energy and focus on results has helped build relationships, trust and confidence with the highest levels of government.”
