RIO DE JANEIRO, Sunday

Former FIFA president Joao Havelange was discharged from hospital on Sunday after having received treatment for several days due to a lung problem, announced the Samaritano hospital in Rio de Janeiro.

However, it did not provide more specifics as to the nature of the lung problem suffered by Havelange, now 99 years old.

On November 26, local Brazilian media confirmed that Havelange had been checked into the Samaritano with respiratory troubles, while adding that “he was in a stable condition and steadily improving.”

Havelange was president of FIFA between 1974 and 1998 but resigned his title of honorary president in 2013, due to his links to a bribery scandal involving ISL, a sports marketing firm.

Due to these accusations, he also resigned his membership of the International Olympic Committee in 2011.
