Be careful on the road

What you need to know:

  • We urge those who are travelling, whether in private or public vehicles, to take great care and ensure they arrive at their destinations in one piece.

From tomorrow, Kenyans in their thousands start their annual exodus from urban centres to rural areas to celebrate Christmas and New Year with their loved ones and extended families.

It is a pilgrimage that many look forward to, for they cannot get the time or the means to travel frequently in the course of the year, but it is also one replete with danger, especially for those forced to use road transport.

For those without private means of transport, this is the time when they are at the mercy PSV crew, starting with conductors who over-charge them, and ending up with drivers who lose complete control of their faculties in a bid to make as much money as possible before the festive season ends.

Unfortunately, in their rush to make a killing, some of them end up breaking all traffic rules and killing fellow Kenyans.

Thus, December has become the deadliest month in the calendar, with the death toll climbing steeply. This need not be inevitable.

We urge those who are travelling, whether in private or public vehicles, to take great care and ensure they arrive at their destinations in one piece.

All they need to do is to use common sense and follow traffic rules to the letter.
