This ethnic talk is wrong

What you need to know:

  • Charity Ngilu’s remarks in defence of Kalonzo Musyoka are simply shocking.
  • According to her, the land belongs to the Kamba community and cannot be taken away from them.

Suspended Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu’s attempt to trivialise and tribalise a serious accusation against Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is unacceptable.

Her remarks in defence of Mr Musyoka over claims that he may have grabbed National Youth Service land in Machakos County are simply shocking.

According to her, the land belongs to the Kamba community and cannot be taken away from them. The implication here is that nobody should question an irregular acquisition of land if the beneficiary is a member of the community.

Considering the numerous cases of irregular allocations and outright land grabbing in the country, one would have expected Ms Ngilu to welcome investigations to establish whether there was any wrongdoing.

The tendency to see things through a tribal prism will be this country’s undoing. Any attempts to ethnicise and shield suspects from investigation must be rejected.

To rid the Lands sector of the endemic rot, meticulous investigations must be carried out and if any evidence of wrongdoing is detected, the land must be repossessed and the culprits prosecuted.
