Kenya 15s team Tusker Simba is currently taking part in the Vodacom Cup, a top Provincial championship in South Africa.
Kenya’s participation is historic since it’s a competition where South Africa Springboks players are brewed and natured. Countries like Argentina and Nambia have in the past taken part in the championships and in the process improved their game.
Argentina won the 2007 Vodacom Cup on their way to finish third at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Namibia were Africa’s representatives at the 2011 RWC alongside former champion South Africa.
The two month stay in South Africa for Vodacom Cup is what the Kenyan team needed ahead of their 2015 Rugby World Cup qualifier where they are due to meet Madagascar, Namibia and Zimbabwe in June.
The Vodacom cup experience is just what the doctor ordered to refine Kenya’s systems ahead of the qualifier. Already, Tusker Simba caused ripples when they stunned Eastern Province Kings 17-10 before they lost to South West Districts Eagles 7-51. Tusker Simba’s run was bound to be bumpy but in the long run the results must be good.
We can only wish the team luck and call on other sponsors to join Breweries and Migaa in actualising Kenya’s dream for the 2015 RWC finals in the UK.
