Resolve boundary issues

An artists impression Konza. If Dr Ndemo had taken an evidence-driven approach, or plain common sense, he would have arrived at the conclusion that spreading the money being spent on Konza on many technology parks around our universities would be a better investment, David Ndii argues. What you need to know:

  • Already, there has been a contention between the leaders of Machakos and Makueni counties over the location of the proposed Konza technocity.
  • And now, a bitter feud is building up between Meru and Isiolo counties over the location of a small town known as Ilat.

Kenyans sceptical about the implementation of the devolved system of government citing Kenyans’ penchant for parochial thinking and ethnocentricity, could have had a point, judging from the small wars erupting here and there over boundaries.

Already, there has been a contention between the leaders of Machakos and Makueni counties over the location of the proposed Konza technocity, an issue that, if unresolved, may lead to enduring bad blood between the residents of the two counties.

And now, a bitter feud is building up between Meru and Isiolo counties over the location of a small town known as Ilat.

This town, which has heretofore been unknown except to the area residents, is assuming significance because of its strategic situation near the proposed Isiolo Airport and its proximity to the proposed Lamu Port-South-Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (Lapsset).

Why it has taken nine months before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission could demarcate the boundaries does not make sense.

Must the commission wait until such small sores start to fester and then watch as people pick up arms?
