Excitement is slowly building up as the country prepares to host the annual Safaricom Safari Sevens this weekend.

Some IRB World Sevens Series participants Argentina and Spain are among the teams that will take part including invitational sides from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and United Kingdom.

That calls for good preparations by the Kenyan Sevens team that finished seventh last season with 84 points, marking a drop in performance from the previous season where they came fifth.

However, reports of a stand-off between some senior Kenya Sevens players and the Kenya Rugby Union over new contracts that will be based on performance are disturbing.

The bone of contention is said to be KRU’s decision to mandate the team’s technical bench to review players’ contract based on performance.

Without going into what might have informed the union’s decision, the move is not ill-thought out, given that rugby is a result-oriented occupation.

If our players aspire to be professional sportsmen, they need not worry about the performance clause in their contracts. Indeed, they should prove their worth with performances that justify their places in the squad.
