Rally behind rugby team victory

The Kenya national rugby team takes on Portugal in an international test match today at the RFUEA grounds in Nairobi.

It will be our first international since the team’s failed 2015 Rugby World Cup qualifying campaign last July. Despite missing out in the RWC finals that start in September, there is still a lot at stake.

Save for Tunisia, Kenya is ranked below the rest. Therefore, victory will see the national team rise in the world ranking. Kenya are placed 32nd, Portugal 23rd and Spain 20th in the world ranking.

As skipper Brian Nyikuli has pointed out, Kenya could get into the top 25 if they win all their five remaining matches.

The results will come along with benefits since World Rugby will definitely turn its attention to Kenya with development grants.

This is why it will be important for the team to put behind last year’s disappointment and rise to the occasion today. The team will need the fans’ backing to realise this. They should, therefore, turn up in large numbers to cheer the team to victory.
