Speed up justice system

What you need to know:

  • In Nairobi, it took just a few weeks to clear a backlog of 10,000 cases. The CJ’s team has now moved to the North Rift and pledged to hear more than 4,000 pending cases in four days.

Chief Justice Willy Mutunga’s campaign to clear a heavy backlog of cases in the courts countrywide is commendable.

As the old adage goes, justice delayed is, indeed, justice denied, and this is not a position the Judiciary should find tenable.

However, attempts to speed up trials are hampered by several factors, including corruption, shoddy investigations, and general sloppiness.

That a special drive can eliminate overnight challenges that have clogged up the system for years is proof that the people seeking justice need not be kept waiting for too long.

In Nairobi, it took just a few weeks to clear a backlog of 10,000 cases. The CJ’s team has now moved to the North Rift and pledged to hear more than 4,000 pending cases in four days.

The question that arises is whether such special efforts are the only way to ensure justice. And now that the broom has moved away from Nairobi, is it a case of business as usual in the capital, delaying and denying justice?

The people deserve a speedy hearing of cases so that justice is served. A judiciary worth its salt must never allow any shortcomings to derail justice.
