Support Kenya’s teams

The 11th All Africa Games are scheduled for September 4 to 19 in Congo Brazzaville. Kenya plans to send not less than 300 sportsmen and women from 18 disciplines to the games, which will not be used by some disciplines to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. However, chef de mission Gordon Oluoch has promised that a quality side would be selected.

The women’s volleyball team, the women’s beach volleyball team, and the men’s and women’s handball teams have qualified for the games. The 1987 All Africa Games held in Nairobi were the most successful for Kenya, where it won 63 medals. At the 2011 Maputo Games, Kenya got 50 medals.

The team’s performance was hampered by poor organisation on the Kenyan side, with some teams even missing proper accommodation. A probe committee was appointed to investigate the mess.

We expect that there will better organisation this time round and that the bottlenecks that could hamper performance will be removed.

The games will be an important build-up for most of the teams that will be trying to qualify for the Olympics. It is imperative that all the disciplines are given the required support to qualify for the Brazzaville Games.
