Replace 14-seaters with clean buses and efficient rail transport

Matatu Owners Association has given the government a 30-day strike notice if the decision to phase out 14-seater PSVs is not rescinded.
The owners cite job loss as one reason the vehicles should not be phased out. This, in their opinion, would create insecurity and cause transport crisis.
The main reason for the endemic traffic jam in the city is use of personal cars. Many use personal cars regardless of the cost due to poor service offered by PSVs.
They are dirty, stuffy, uncomfortable, driven recklessly, poorly maintained, manned by arrogant crew and have no schedules.
Many matatu crew members have no time for the shower room.
Matatu owners should understand that commuters use their vehicles to get better service. If creation of employment was the only role of transport sector, then the government should simply allow boda bodas to invade even the CBDs.
To curb the use of personal cars, modern metropolis around the world have invested in high capacity buses with dedicated lanes, light rail transit or tube transport system (subways).
These offer value for money because they are clean, comfortable and efficient; one can plan and arrive on time. Such cities then discourage use of personal cars through deterrent parking fees.
All efforts towards efficient public transport in the city should be encouraged, not resisted.
