As I read Verah Okeyo’s life story on Wednesday in Living (Nation), I could not help fighting tears back.

One question in my mind when I read about the orphan and her siblings was why administration officers allow such occurrences.

How can they allow helpless orphans to be deprived of their property?

But I thank God for Verah’s headmistress, Sr Muinde, who went looking for her after she missed a whole term.

Kudos, too, to Mary Wainaina, mother of Verah’s schoolmate who accommodated her on holidays.

But there’s a lesson for parents; to be good mentors of children. Vera is inspired by her parents’ hard work.

SIMON KIOI,

Thika
