In last Sunday’s edition, Mr Sunny Bindra presented a touching and well articulated opinion titled “Kenyan product quality has many miles to cover”.

In his opinion, the respected management guru made a comparative study of Kenyan products against imported ones with respect to quality.

However, I realised that his criticism of Kenyan manufacturers was skewed as it portrayed them as solely to blame. He did not in any way show the strengths of our products.

He also never addressed existing weak regulatory frameworks.

The truth is that we are not where Europe, Asia, etc, are. However, I belief we are on our way there. I equally know many imported products whose standards are low. Quality in itself has never been, is not and will never be a destination.

Quality is not an instantaneous character. Quality is well described as a continuous improvement trend.

If one were to compare the current quality of local tissue paper, ice cream, chocolate, etc, and what was there 10 years ago, the difference would be huge. But we are yet to get to the peak and continuous improvement must be maintained. I request Kenyans to buy Kenyan and build Kenya.
