August 4 will be the big day Kenyans have been waiting for. It might see the end of the clamour for a new constitution, or it might not. But as we wait for the big day, Kenyans are clearly not at ease.

The grisly post-election violence of 2008 is still fresh on our minds, and we are praying it does not happen again after the referendum.

Everything is in the hands of Kenyans, whether it be the ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ that wins. This is a very delicate period for this country and it calls for great care to avoid any utterances that might trigger animosity.

Claims that tension is mounting in some parts of the country, especially the Rift Valley region, is disturbing. Security precautions should be taken urgently.

Democracy and freedom of expression should be reflected in our contrary opinions on the draft.

Politicians should caution their supporters against using violence.

On August 4, Kenyans will queue up to vote in the crucial referendum on the new constitution.

Kenyans have perused the proposed constitution and decided whether or not to vote for it.

They may be happy or unhappy with the provisions of the proposed constitution, hence this will affect which way they vote.

Contentious issues like abortion and the kadhi’s courts will be considered and a decision made by voters.

The onus is on individuals — vote wisely in the forthcoming referendum.
