Motorists harassed in the name of speed limit

What you need to know:

  • One would expect the senior officer to also provide statistics on the achievements of the National Transport and Safety Authority and the traffic police in addressing these problems.

Traffic Commandant Charlton Mureithi’s article, “Why the police are imposing speed limits” (Nation, October 21) provided statistics to justify the imposition of the 50kph speed limit on our roads. Unfortunately, the tone of the article was that of the motorist being the problem from whichever way one looks at it.

The solution is therefore to tame the wayward motorists by all means possible and there will be no more accidents on our roads.

He deliberately ignored the lack of clear road signs indicating where speed limits begin and end, absence of clear markings on the road, bad roads, and corrupt traffic police officers (refer to the Sh3,000 bribe price on the same page) as major contributors to road accidents.

One would expect the senior officer to also provide statistics on the achievements of the National Transport and Safety Authority and the traffic police in addressing these problems.

I, for instance, know of sections of Kisumu-Busia and Kisumu-Bondo roads where there are no road signs, yet the police lay in wait for motorists over speeding.

As of now the public has no choice but to consider any actions by NTSA and traffic police as harassment.
