Of all government employees, teachers still most poorly paid

That teachers are planning a nationwide strike to demand better pay has not come as a surprise. When civil servants were awarded a hefty pay rise recently, the teachers were ignored, so such a backlash had to be expected.

The strike will have a devastating effect on the education system and the government must move swiftly to avert it at a time students are preparing for exams.

It must take blame for the current impasse due to its failure to honour the 1997 deal with teachers. Among State employees, teachers are the most poorly paid.
