People with Aids still stigmatised in society

Whenever we hear of HIV and Aids victims, our minds rush to conclude that they were either adulterous or engaged in irresponsible sex.

The virus can also be transmitted through other means that have nothing to do with sex. Mother-child infection during birth is an example.

Many employers require HIV tests be conducted to establish the health status of new employees. This rule locks many out of employment.

We have Bills on the women and the disabled but nobody has thought of tabling a Bill to safeguard the rights of people living with HIV.

It’s sad that Aids victims are still stigmatised in our communities.
