Universities incapable of producing top scholars

After Prof Ali Mazrui was laid to rest in Mombasa on Sunday, it is probably time to reflect on the end products of our education system.
Not much can be written home about the current scholars.

The 8:4:4 system churns out graduates who are not self-reliant. Even master’s degree holders exhibit no life skills. Education has not caused any social or behavioural change, for we lay too much emphasis on passing exams.

Universities are doing the country a great disservice by just being conveyor belts. They lack the intellectual vibrancy of scholarship there was in the 1970s. We need to ask how we can make the Mazruis of our time.
