There is no other way to deal with serious human rights violations such as tribal clashes committed over a long period during every general election since 1991, culminating in the atrocities of 2007.

The only effective deterrent is to call those who have committed the crimes to account. The rule of law must be restored. The special tribunal will help us get justice. It will encourage us to have confidence in our judicial system, believe in our country again, and develop the courage to deal with our own demons.

Prof Maathai, a Nobel laureate, is the founder of the Green Belt Movement.

Why did you Prof Wangari not support the Special Tribunal bill brought earlier since it was the same as the so called Manyara's bill except the addition that the President be stripped of immunity to prosecution? Are you supporting those bent on creating a vacancy in the President's post before 2012? Be reminded the incubent President Kibaki in 2007 had been democratically and popularly by Kenyans unlike the previous times you refer to. People in your status should do better and support what is best for majority of Kenyans not power hungry maniacs who care for only themselves.
