National dialogue? We have divas, a true reflection of our warped mores

What you need to know:

  • They may think they are trading in some valuable real estate among the upper crust, but they are no better than the flesh peddlers in those backstreet houses of ill repute
  • Our cheap wenches who think they are stars cannot sing a note to save their lives, and they certainly cannot be within a mile of any social register.

We have been consumed in the recent past by a schoolboy pissing contest that passes for national dialogue. The farce and pathos of the people who hold our collective destiny in their hands engaged in puerile shouting matches is part of our national tragedy.

What we have seen so far from our national leaders in the debate over whether we should have a national gabfest is no more enlightening than the bimbo eruption we have been subjected to on national television.

In the past few days, we have seen some girl who calls herself a diva make a spectacle of herself on prime-time TV. She claims to be a University of Nairobi student and freely confesses to living a life of easy virtue, courtesy of rich old men willing to pay for her talents.

Then there is the other one who calls herself a socialite, coming up with fantastic tales on the millions she claims to spend on bleaching her skin, tying on plastic hair, and generally living well via also trading on her assets.

Only in Kenya would some dumb social climber proclaim herself a diva or socialite as if that were a badge of honour, when she has absolutely no clue what those words mean.

The self-proclaimed Campus Diva cannot be a diva by any stretch of the imagination. If she at least knows how to read, any dictionary will tell her that a diva is a celebrated female singer, originally a woman of outstanding talent in the world of opera, but in modern times, the accolade has been extended to any big star in movies, theatre, and popular music.

Then there is that other wench, famous mostly for her extensive derrière, who described herself as a socialite who earns her keep by attending functions and events for a fee, in addition to some moneyed men willing to keep her in pocket.

There was also another one of similar mien who somehow made it to the Big Brother Africa house.

If they had ever mastered their ABCs, they would have learned that a socialite is not just a harlot living on the proceeds of easy virtue, but usually a woman of standing in society based on birth, breeding, and old wealth.

NO CASH HAND-OUTS

Perhaps our self-proclaimed socialites think they are emulating the American celebs, who get so much press for merely partying to excess, misbehaving, and making utter public spectacles of themselves.

What our wenches seem to be in ignorance of is that even if the Nicole Richies, Paris Hiltons, and Kardashian girls can achieve stardom with zero talent in the singing, acting, and dancing departments, they are not living on cash hand-outs from foolish men; they are simply making use of fabulous wealth already in the family.

Our cheap wenches who think they are stars cannot sing a note to save their lives, and they certainly cannot be within a mile of any social register.

They may think they are trading in some valuable real estate among the upper crust, but they are no better than the flesh peddlers in those backstreet houses of ill repute, such as the late lamented Imani Day and Night Club, where many a young man in days of yore had a first experience of carnal pleasures at the price of a bottle of beer, then a princely Sh5.

Perhaps as we talk about talking, we can include in the agenda the serious national crisis exposed by the bimbo eruption.

That these floosies think it is perfectly decent and acceptable to put on national display just what they are exposes deep decadence and moral rot in society that is reflected all the way up to national leadership where morality, decency, basic honesty, and sense of right and wrong is totally lacking.

We will gladly elect to high office the most corrupt and depraved individuals simply because they have the money to buy our vote and are from our tribe.

We will admire and place on high pedestal scoundrels, thieves, drug traffickers, and murderers simply because they are wealthy, but we will not question the source of their wealth.

Our “divas” and “socialites” might well qualify to run for president, for they are simply excelling in national mores.
