MV Pwani, the largest of all ferries built locally for Kenya, at a scrapyard at Pitem Engineering Works in Mombasa where it is being cut for scrap on December 24, 2016. The vessel, which was formerly called MV Safina, was constructed by African Marine & General Engineering Company in the city in 1975, the same year she was commissioned. She operated across the Likoni and Mtongwe channels and was decommissioned in 2012. MV Pwani was then sold for scrap in 2014. Last year, Kenya awarded the Turkish company Özata Tersanecilik a tender to build two ferries for the Likoni channel. They are expected to be delivered this year. PHOTO | DAVID NJENGA
