Huge field troops to Nyali Club for KPA tournament

What you need to know:

  • A steady golfer, Oluoch is likely to be among the players to watch in the event which has also attracted some of the country’s top junior players, including Adel Balala, Agil Is-Haq and Mathew Wahome.
  • The par-72 Thika course, which hosted last weekend’s Eric Kabera and Wambui Wambugu Memorial trophies, will host the Barclays Bank Golf Circuit which has attracted 200 golfers.

A big field of 155 golfers, mostly drawn from clubs at the Coast, will compete in the 2014 Kenya Ports Authority golf tournament this weekend at the Nyali Golf and Country Club.

Club captain Sammy Mwangi Kamau is however still accepting post entries, particularly from those who were late in putting up their names.

During last weekend’s KTB tournament, handicap six golfer Joseph Oluoch took the overall title after posting an impressive 39 points despite the strong afternoon wind.

He won by a point from Kevim Carrol, Akram Sheikh and Mukesh Sanghavi.

Other than hot conditions and late afternoon wind, the par-71 Nyali course, one of the best in the country, is in tip-top condition and ready for the event meant to bring together customers and stakeholders in the sea transport, import and export as well clearing and forwarding industry.

MAJOR EVENTS

Besides the Manchester Salver in Eldoret and the AccessKenya at Limuru Country Club, three other major events will take place at Thika Sports Club, Kenya Railways and Royal Nairobi Golf Clubs.

Open to golfers from Thika, Ruiru and Thika Greens, the 18-hole stableford event is expected to produce six local qualifiers and three each from the other participating clubs who will join other qualifiers at the grand finale at Karen Country Club in February next year.

Safaricom Business Challenge moves to Royal where a number of qualifiers will book their places in the grand finale to be held at Leisure Lodge next April.

The nine-hole Kenya Railway club will host the first leg of the Kenya Airways Golf series.

In coming KQ CEO Mbuvi Ngunze will launch the new-look series this morning at Kenya Railway Golf Club where in attendance will be Kenya Golf Union chairman Peter Warui.
