What you need to know:

  • Arrogate was beaten 1.4 lengths in the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar, his first start since an impressive Dubai World Cup in March.
  • The San Diego loss ended a seven-race win streak for the colt, which included a record-breaking Travers performance, Breeders' Cup Classic win and inaugural Pegasus.

Bob Baffert's emotions following Saturday's Grade 1 Pacific Classic weren't quite on par with a trainer who had just finished one-two in a $1 million race.

The superstar Arrogate was defeated a half-length by his stablemate Collected at Del Mar.

While Baffert was happy for owner Peter Fluor and the other Collected connections, he appeared more than a bit disappointed in a post-race press conference.

Arrogate was beaten 1.4 lengths in the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar, his first start since an impressive Dubai World Cup in March.

The San Diego loss ended a seven-race win streak for the colt, which included a record-breaking Travers performance, Breeders' Cup Classic win and inaugural Pegasus.

It has to be remembered that even the greatest of athletes can have a bad day. Tomorrow is another novelty for Arrogate.

SEAL DOUBLE

The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, was its usual phenomenal self, except this time round a 30,000 sell-out crowd at Ascot, saw Fran Berry seal a double.

This forged Great Britain and Ireland ahead.

Going into the final Sprint, three of four teams were in with a chance of claiming the whole event.

Europe and the Rest of the World had no hope, once Golden Apollo shot forward with Fran Berry, earlier having struck the post with Great Hull.

Berry also lifted the Silver Saddle award for leading rider. He is climbing steadily up the Irish ranks, and this Shergar Cup, will boost his boomsky in a big way.

MICHELLE PAYNE

Australian jockey, Michelle Payne, was unable to compete due to a virus. It opened a door for Hollie Doyle, but, Jamie Spencer snuffed her hopes away on Stake Acclaim - a landmark at the same moment for Spencer, chalking up his 2,000the winner.

He is the 22nd man in history to reach this milestone. However, this is not even a half-way mark for the brilliant Sir Gordon Richards, who scored 4,870 winners, yonkers ago.
