Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) vice-chairman Hilmi Ali said the countries will battle for a ticket to the Under-16 Africa Nations Cup set for Mali and Togo in August and September.

The countries that have confirmed their availability in the Mombasa event are Burundi, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Rwanda, South Sudan, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and hosts Kenya.

Ali said arrangements to host the tournament have started and appealed to Mombasa County government, corporate bodies and well-wishers to sponsor the event.

“We are happy to have been given the chance to host this event and we want to make sure everything is going on well. We want the championship to end successfully so that we can be considered for future tournaments,” said Ali.

There will be three categories to be contested. There will be the main event of traditional basketball for under-16 participants whose matches are to be played at KPA Makande Gymnasium.

Other two categories will be the 3-on-3 tournament for Under-18 and seniors. These matches will be hosted at the open Mama Ngiva Drive.
