Champs Upper Hill stay on track

Reigning regional basketball champions Upper Hill School were made to fight from behind to squeeze a narrow 60-59 win over South Sudan’s Kaujok in a tough quarter-final match at the Brookside East Africa Secondary School games on Friday in Dar es Salaam.

The towering Sudanese took the game to Upper Hill from the tip off leading 18-14 in the first quarter but the champions stepped up their game in the second quarter which they won 19-12 for a narrow 33-30 lead at the break.

Led by David Tombek and Gatwek Kochia, the Sudanese team would yet again turn the heat on Upper Hill to take a lead which they held until the final seconds of the game.

WINNING FREE THROW

But Upper Hill’s Martin Mugambi nailed two free throws to tie the game in the final quarter before Atter Isah scored the game winning free throw.

Joshua Okeyo of Upper Hill scored a game-high 14 points while Tombek led the scores for the Sudanese team with 12 points, with Kochia pouring in eight more points.

The other Kenyan boys basketball team Friends School Kamusinga were knocked out in the quarter finals by Tanzania’s Lord Burden Powel who beat them 66-48.

The Tanzanians controlled the game from start to finish winning the first quarter 26-14 and the second quarter 14-05 for a comfortable 40-19 lead at the break.

Enoch Maengela led Burden Powel with 18 points while James Bill contributed 16 for Kamusinga.

The girls’ semi-finals were due to be played yesterday afternoon, with defending champions Shimba Hills taking on Tigoi Girls in an all-Kenyan contest while St Mary’s Kitende of Uganda were up against compatriots Nabisunza in the other semi final fixture.
