Kenyan teams score big in Zone V matches

  • The Zone V basketball championship has attracted teams from Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Egypt and hosts Uganda. 

Kenyan national basketball teams started their campaign in this year’s Zone V Nations qualifiers on Monday with wins at Kampala’s Lugogo MTN Arena.

The men’s team put up a spirited fight against unpredictable Somali before composing themselves to win 97-79 in a tough game. The Somali side had resisted, restricting the Kenyans to a first quarter lead of just 22-21. 

Desmond Owili registered 16 points, William Ochieng’ added 15 points and Ancette Wafula 14. Ariel Oual contributed 12 points and Victor Odendo 10 points to propel Kenya to victory.

Somalia captain Yusuf Qafoow was their highest scorer after he registered 23 points. Others were forward Osman Olol on 21 points plus Tabit Mohamed and Ahmed Eman who contributed 14 each. Earlier, Kenyan women, who are defending champions, defied the odds to overcome a resilient Egyptian side 63-57.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Brigid Nanzala grabbed a big double-double (16 points and 10 rebounds) to lead the Kenyans to victory.

Hilda Luvandwa bagged 14  points while Samba Mjomba and Vilma Achieng’ scored 10 each. Soraya Mohamed scored for Egyptian team high 14 points while Reem Ousrama registered12 and Sarah Massoyo 10.

The Zone V basketball championship has attracted teams from Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Egypt and hosts Uganda. 

Women teams are from Kenya, Egypt and Uganda while men’s teams have come from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Somalia and Egypt. Only one team shall qualify for the All Africa championship while two men’s teams shall qualify from the championship.

The winners shall qualify for the next All Africa Games, doubling as a qualifier for the 2016 Brazil Olympic Games.

Elsewhere, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Monday the league will review its policies on domestic violence, trying to head off the kind of crisis now facing the NFL.

Silver, attending an event on Staten Island to announce a youth outreach program linked to the 2015 All Star Game at Madison Square Garden, said that the NBA learns “from other league’s experiences”.
