Shimba Hills retain basketball title

Shimba Hills Girls’ basketball team, Sinyolo Girls’ hockey squad retained their titles at the Brookside East Africa secondary school games in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Saturday.

Friends School Kamusinga also kept the boys’ hockey title they won last year. But it was a sad story in boys’ football and basketball as Kenyan teams lost in the semi-finals.

Upper Hill who were the defending champions in boys’ basketball lost 57-47 to Tanzania’s Makongo in semi-finals. The final will be an all-Tanzanian affair after Lord Burden Powel also beat ETG Burundi 84-79 in a tough semi-final to reach the final.

In a repeat of last year’s girls’ basketball final against St Mary’s Kitende, Shimba Hills took the first quarter 18-14 but relaxed in the second quarter which the Ugandans, buoyed by former Shimba Hills point guard Primrose Asura, won 12-11. Kwale-based Shimba Hills however won the last quarter 16-06 to take the trophy. Shimba Hills’ Everlyne Oketch scored a game-high 26 points while Lulenzi Juliana top-scored for Kitende with 12 points.

In girls’ hockey, high-flying Sinyolo retained the trophy after beating Uganda’s Namagunga 8-0. Maureen Okumu scored five goals for Sinyolo while Nelly Anyango, Janet Awino and Maureen Daisy one each. St John’s Kaloleni finished third after bearing City High 3-0.

KAMUSINGA BEAT MASENO

Friends School Kamusinga beat compatriots Maseno 3-0 to retain the boys’ hockey title. In rugby, Maseno beat compatriots Menengai 13-0 to qualify for today’s final. Albert Obura and Nevil Omondi each made a try while Jeremy Odhiambo scored a penalty.

On Sunday, champions Kwanthanze meet Rwanda’s GS Indagaburezi in girls’ volleyball final. Kwanthanze, who have won all their matches without conceding a set, saw off Malava Girls 3-0 (25-17, 25-23 and 25-18) in the first semi-final while Rwanda’s Indagaburezi beat Kenya’s Kosirai girls 3-0 in the second semi-final.

Kwanthanze’s Ann Lowen was upbeat after the match. “The only present I can give to the school is to retain this trophy. We will take Indagaburezi who gave us a problem in last year’s final very seriously,” she said. The boys’ final will be a repeat of last year’s games when champions Malava take on St Mary’s Kitende from Uganda.

Kenya’s Tartar, Butere Girls and St John’s Kaloleni were all bundled out at the semi-finals in girls’ football. Tartar lost 1-0 to Butere in the quarter-finals via an own goal by goalkeeper Steffany Achieng. Butere lost 4-3 on penalties to ES Rukara from Rwanda in the semis while St John’s Kaloleni fell 2-1 to Tanzania’s Makongo High.
