Shimba Hills storm quarter-finals

Girls’ basketball champions Shimba Hills made sure of a place in Friday’s semi-finals with an emphatic 75-15 victory over South Sudan’s Rumbek at this year’s Brookside East Africa Secondary Schools Championship in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Shimba Hills, who have won all their matches after their 79-56 win over Nabisunza from Uganda in their first match, led 18-05 in the first quarter and 32-11 at the break. The regional champions never looked back as they went on to win the match easily.

UPPER HILL BOYS LOST

But boys’ basketball champions Upper Hill High School were not lucky, losing their decisive match to Lord Burden Powel from Uganda 68-67 to finish second in group A going into their quarter-final matches.

Upper Hill led the first quarter 22-14 but let the Tanzanians outscore them 20-13 in a charged game which could have gone either way.

Parklands Arya from Kenya blew their chances of playing in the semi-finals in their maiden appearance when they lost 63-55 to compatriots Tigoi Girls in a match in which victory would have guaranteed them a place in the last four.

TIGHT CONTEST

Group B representatives in the semi finals were to be known Thursday after the final group games involving Uganda’s St Mary’s Kitende and Kizuka High from Tanzania.

In boys’ handball, Kenya champions Kimilili were bundled out of the championships after losing 27-26 to Dynamic High from Uganda in a closely- contested match at the Dar es Salam National Stadium indoor courts Thursday.

Kimilili, who beat St Aloys from Rwanda 26-19 in the opening match, suffered a shock 15-13 loss to Mwanakwerekwe from Zanzibar to bid the tournament good bye.

Kenya’s other representatives, Masosa High, were also beaten 23-14 by Kakungulu High from Uganda and must therefore win their match against ES Kigoma from Rwanda to advance.

Girls’ handball matches saw Sega Girls force a 15-15 all draw with ES Mukingi from Rwanda to increase their chances of makng it into the last four.

Defending champions Moi Girls School Kamusinga strolled into the semi-finals with a deserved 18-14 victory over Lubiri High from Uganda.

The girls’ semi-final matches will take place this morning, the same time the boys quarter-finals will be played.
