Shimba Hills win to stay on course

Champions Shimba Hills stayed on course to winning the girls’ basketball trophy for the third straight year after beating Kirigara from Aberdare region 111-15 in the Brookside secondary schools national Term One games at the Shimo la Tewa grounds and Shanzu Teachers Training College.

Shimba Hills, who beat rivals Tigoi 68-23 in their first match, won the one-sided encounter to confirm their place in the semi-finals. Shimba Hills fielded a second-string side and raced to a 35-03 first quarter lead for a 57-08 advantage at the break.

Shimba Hills won the third quarter 29-02 and the fourth 25-05. Beryl Aoko led the winners with 24 points, with captain Esther Samba scoring 17.

SCORED EIGHT POINTS

Irene Murimi led Kirigara with eight points while Grace Wangui scored four. Kirigara exited the tournament, having lost their opening Pool B match 66-16 against Moi Girls Eldoret from Nakuru region.

Kirigara coach Peter Muiriithi said his team was let down by size against Shimba Hills who dwarfed his players. “We almost matched them in skill but we were let down by size. I must start looking for height straight away,” he said.

Tigoi also came from behind to beat Moi Girls Eldoret 60-41. Moi Girls led the first quarter 11-08 but succumbed to pressure in the second quarter, losing 21-06.

Tigoi won the third and fourth quarters 18-14 and 13-10 respectively to secure victory. Daisy Ayodi top-scored for Tigoi with 19 points and Lavenda Adhiambo added another 16. Bilha Cherono scored 11 points for the losers.

In the boys’ category, defending champions Upper Hill made sure of a place in the semi finals with a hard fought 64-46 victory over a stubborn Mang’u. They had earlier beaten Kirobon from Nakuru region 77-25 in the opening match.

The other boys’ matches saw Kirobon wallop Kangaru 91-45 while Mang’u High ensured Kangaru do not make the top four with a 53-33 victory in the first match.

Thursday’s basketball matches will see Kamusinga face off with Ambira in a match which will decide who tops pool A. Other matches will see St George’s of Coast region take on Mandera.
