British police recover Wanyama’s vehicle after robbery

What you need to know:

  • “My heart skipped a beat when I noticed the car missing at the parking lot. But more shock awaited me when I accessed the house. They (burgers) accessed the house through my garden at the backyard, they broke the back window and came in...” Wanyama told Daily Nation Sport on phone.

British Police Tuesday recovered Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama’s car in London at around 11am Kenyan time (9am UK time), hours after the Sh8 million-worth Range Rover SUV was stolen alongside the player’s personal belongings at his home in Winchester.

Wanyama was not at his five bed-roomed house, situated some 125km away from London at the time of the incident, as he was featuring for his team - Southampton FC  - in Monday night’s 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park in Birmingham, some 235km away.

The player only learnt of the burglary when he returned home at around 3am UK time (5am Kenyan time) yesterday morning, about 26 hours after he had left the place.

“My heart skipped a beat when I noticed the car missing at the parking lot. But more shock awaited me when I accessed the house. They (burgers) accessed the house through my garden at the backyard, they broke the back window and came in...” Wanyama told Daily Nation Sport on phone.

VERY WEALTHY YOUNG MAN

Other items stolen from the house include three large screen TV sets and other electronics, some 30 pairs of shoes and other accessories.

It could not be established if all - or some of the items had been recovered - alongside the vehicle, which was traced by aid of an installed tracking system. There was no confirmation of any arrests by press time.

“These people seemed to have had ample time to execute the mission. They ransacked the whole house and even found where I had kept the car keys. They then opened the front window and used that as the exit route,” Wanyama said.

He immediately called Southampton team manager Fran Alonso to notify him. Alonso arrived at the scene half an hour later accompanied by police, who took finger prints and foot prints of the scene before collecting some statements from his neighbours.
“I was forced to sleep at a hotel. I have to go buy some clothes to change before report for training,” the player said. Southampton fans, in the meantime, took to the club’s social forum saintsweb.co.uk to convey their sympathy.
“Bummer! Hope his concentration is not affected too much. Despite being a very wealthy young man, it must still be a shock to the system,” Saint Johny wrote.
