Brunlehner splashes to new record

Maria Brunlehner of Mombasa Academy set a new 50-meters 10-11 years girls’ Breaststroke national record when she clocked 38.78 seconds on the second day of Coast Casa Open and Age Group Swimming Championship at Aga Khan Academy on Sunday.
Eleven-year-old Maria, under the guidance of coach Fakhry Mansoor, broke the seven-year-old record of 39.87 seconds which Achieng Ajulu Bushnell set in South Africa on August 20, 2005.
She beat her two rivals Diya Shah of Oshwal Academy and Mombasa Academy’s Chiyu Melody who returned 43.45 and 44.63 respectively.
On Saturday, Maria bettered her 10-11 years’ age group 100m freestyle record 1:06.38. Maria’s time in the event was better than those registered by Chloe Dhanji of Oshwal Academy who returned 43.18 in the girls 12-13 years and her school mate’s Catherine Mason who finished in 40.78.
Broke own record
Another new Kenyan record was set in the boys’ 14-15 years 50m Breaststroke event where 15-year-old Tory Pragassa of Bandari Swim Club clocked 32.25, breaking his own old mark of 32.91 he established on October 15.
He was followed by Fergus Leckie of Breaburn Mombasa in 38.13 and Mombasa Academy’s Billy Muteti in 39.0.
