What you need to know:

  • It will be more than 3,000kms of battle between man and machine across the region
  • Alastair Cavenagh and Tejvir Rai recently participated in the Arusha Rally to test their Porsches for the nine-day race.

Preparations for the 2015 Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally are at an advanced stage as drivers use national rallies to test their machines for the gruelling road race.

Alastair Cavenagh and Tejvir Rai recently participated in the Arusha Rally to test their Porsches for the nine-day race.

“The Arusha Rally was good. It was the right place to test the car as we were running short of time with no immediate rally in Kenya,” said Cavenagh, a former national champion.

While Cavenagh opted to miss the Machakos Rally, Rai made sure he followed his testing programme in Arusha with the latest round of the KNRC in Machakos.

Cavenagh said he may take part in the KCB Nakuru Rally in the Proton while the Porsche gets ready for Mombasa early November in time for the Classic Rally.

The Cavenagh/Gavin Laurence partnership, frequently seen in the national competition, will continue in the Classic Rally.

CHAGER WILL NAVIGATE RAI

The Kenya National Rally Drivers’ champion, Baldev Chager, will also take part in the rally though he will be navigating Onkar Rai in a Porsche 911.

The cars will cover about 3331 kilometres divided into 24 competitive stages across Kenya and Tanzania. 80 per cent of the stages are new. The total competitive stage will be 2000kms.

Day One, November 19, will be centred within Mombasa region, with stages between the port city and Amboseli (November 20), Amboseli to Amboseli (November 21) and Amboseli/Lake Manyara (November 22) before taking a one-day rest at the Lake Manyara camp (November 23). Day Six (November 24) will see cars head for Arusha through some of the most fascinating sections of the rally.

Day Seven (November 25) battle will see the competition based around the Arusha area before the surviving crews head for the Taita Hill Lodge for final overnight rest halt (November 26).
