Magnificent Muteti sets four national swimming records in Mombasa

Six new national records were set on the first day of the Coast Amateur Swimming Association (CASA) Inter Clubs Invitational Championship at Aga Khan Academy swimming pool in Mombasa on Saturday.

Emily Muteti of Mombasa Aquatics set four national marks while Kunaal Khagram and Aheer Chatterjee established one national record each in the championship sponsored jointly by Mombasa County government and Nairobi Sports House.

Sixteen-year-old Muteti, undoubtedly the current Kenyan swimming queen started the day setting two new national records in the girls 16 years and over and all-comers 400 meters freestyle when she returned four minutes 44.24.

She broke the girls 16 years and over record time of 4:49.0 held by Daniela Awori that she set in Uganda on April 24, last year. Emily also bettered the previous all-comers record time of 4:44.24 held by Gori Kotecha since October 28, 2011.

The Mombasa Aquatic girl managed to set two other new national records in the 50m butterfly event. She set a new girls 16 years and over record of 28.47 to beat the previous mark of 29.65 held by Sylvia Brunlehner since December14, 2012.

In the same event, Emily broke an all-comers record in the same event set by Brunlehner of 30.10 since June 1, 2012.

Another Mombasa Aquatic swimmer, Kunaal Khagram set a new national mark in the boys 10-11 years 400m freestyle when he clocked 5:15.19, breaking the previous record of 5:16. 49 held by Usamah Tamimy since September 25, 1999.

Muteti was able to establish a new CASA record in the girls 16 years and over 50m butterfly event, clocking 28.47, shattering her previous personal best time of 29.19.
BEAT HIS OLD TIME

Another national record set was by Bandari Swim Club’s Aheer Chatterjee in the 400m individual medley event for boys 10-11 years when he returned 5:57.30 beating his old time of 6:00.70 which he set early this year.

Mombasa Aquatics’ Issa Abdalla, son of former Kenya international swimmer Hemed Dola, almost equalled his Coast Amateur Simming Associaiton mark in the boys 16 years and over 50m butterfly of 25.72 when he swum in 26.15.
