Federation International Automobile (FIA) President Jean Todt has thrown his weight behind the return of Safari Rally to the World Rally Championship fold.

Todt, who is in the country for a two-day visit, said Kenya must fulfill the required standards before Safari Rally can revert to a WRC event in the 2019.

However, Todt said he is impressed by the commitment and steps taken by the Kenyan government, Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF) and Automobile Association of Kenya (AAK) with a view to having the Safari Rally regain its WRC status.

“I support that one event in Africa be part of the WRC international calendar but that is for FIA to decide,” said Todt. “It’s something that I want fulfilled but it’s an ongoing process.”

Todt reminded Kenya that they will have to respect the new standards that FIA has put in place where the competition has to be reduced from long distances covering 3,500km over three days to manageable distances.

“The rally will definitely be held on closed roads and it’s the responsibility of the government, KMSF and AAK to fulfil the financial costs that come along with such events,” said Todt. “Safari Rally has historic turnout but that is no more hence it has to adjust to modern times.”

Todt was addressing a press conference at Hotel Serena where he gave updates on the possibilities of Safari rally regaining its WRC status by 2019.

“I know Kenyans are passionate about rallying and that the requirements will be fulfilled especially after the current government put the rally in its manifesto,” said Todt, who was accompanied by KMSF President Phineas Kimanthi.
