Foundation donates 5,000 chess boards

The Kasparov Chess Foundation Africa on Tuesday donated 5000 chess boards worth about Sh6 million to boost the sport in the country.

The boards will be distributed to the 47 counties, especially in schools as part of Chess Kenya’s drive to promote the sport.

Graham Jurgensen, the Foundation’s director, said brilliant chess players who are unable to proceed with school due to financial constraints will be given bursaries.

“We want to ensure that all bright but needy students complete their studies so that they can achieve their dreams in society,” Jurgensen said.

He also said that the Foundation will provide air tickets to the Kenyan team headed for the biennial chess Olympiad in August in Tromso, Norway.

The final phase of qualifiers to pick the final team of five men and five women will be held on the Labour Day weekend at the YWCA Hostels in Nairobi. Chess Kenya Chairman Githinji Hinga thanked the foundation for supporting the sport.

Elsewhere, visiting Grandmaster Dejan Antic from Serbia has said that Kenyans will be tough to beat at the Olympiads.
