Kenya’s dream of lifting their first ever Men’s Africa Club Volleyball Championship title ended Tuesday after the General Service Unit (GSU) lost 0-3 Esperance in their final group match in Sousse, Tunisia.

GSU were the only Kenyan side carrying the country’s hope to the quarter-finals after Kenya Prisons were eliminated by Libya’s Al Ahly with a similar margin.

The Kenya team lost in sets of 25-25, 25-24 and 25-21 in the Pool C that Al Ahly of Egypt won.

Kenya Prisons were bundled out of the race after losing to powerhouse Al Ahly on Monday. North African clubs continued with their dominance at the championships as they all advanced.

Esperance, Ahly Ben Ghanzi from Libya, Ahly of Egypt and Ahly Tripoli of Lybia became the latest entrants to the quarter finals list, joining Tunisia and Algeria who have each produced two teams.

However, GSU coach Chenje hailed the Kenyan sides for putting up a good fight. He said they will invest in better preparations ahead of the next edition of the event.

“We did our best only that our rivals were better prepared. We’ll start preparing early so we can have competitive edge next time,” Chenje said, even as GSU finished third place in Pool C with nine points, six less than Esperance who topped the pool.

Kenya Prisons are fourth having won only one of their four Pool D matches.
