Commonwealth bantamweight bronze medalist Benson Gicharu is optimistic of victory when he takes on Argentine Alberto Melian on November 1 in AIBA Pro-Boxing match.

Gicharu has insisted that he will not be intimated by his opponent’s supporters in Buenos Aires.

The Police boxer has had a rather torrid time in the build-up to the Aiba Pro Boxing match as his wife was taken ill and had to undergo surgery but is optimistic that he will hit top form next in the next four days.

“My training has been interrupted as I had to attend to my wife who was taken ill. She underwent an operation on her stomach and this has taken toll on me but I am determined to put it behind,” he said. “The aim of every boxer is to fight to win and this is my motive,” said the hard-hitting pugilist who won Kenya a silver medal in the flyweight category in the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Police head coach, George ‘Foreman’ Onyango who also doubles up as ‘Hit Squad’ assistant coach  said Gicharu will draw benefit from the Argentina outing.

“This is a top-level of open AIBA Pro Boxing and he stands to gain immensely,” he said.

Should Gicharu floor Alberto, who will be enjoying an overwhelming home support, he will just need to win one more fight to earn the nod to fight at the 2016 Olympic Games scheduled for Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

In Buenos Aires, the Police boxer will be handled by coaches David Munuhe and Michael Mucine.
