What you need to know:

  • Since he joined K’Ogalo in 2009, Teddy has been a loyal servant emerging as the anchor man in the team’s midfield.
  • His exit now leaves room for Erick Ochieng to flourish in a -two -man midfield with the dreadlocked Ugandan Godfrey ‘Baba’ Kizito.
  • The club is also still locked in negotiations with Bandari over the fate of Shaban Kenga. Kenga joined Gor in January on a six months loan deal and his parent club wants him back though the league champions are unwilling to let him go.

Gor Mahia have loaned midfielder Anthony “Teddy” Akumu to Sudanese club Al Khartoum on a six-month deal.

The lanky midfield enforcer jetted out yesterday to put pen to paper on the deal as well as undergo a medical.  Club secretary general Chris Omondi said that the move was right for the big holding midfielder as he wanted to go.

“We had to let him go. His contract is running out in November and there was the danger of losing him for free.

“We fundamentally agreed on a loan arrangement. It’s also good for his development and we could not stand on his way. We have an option of making the deal permanent at the end of November should he (Teddy) be keen on a long term arrangement,” he said.

Since he joined K’Ogalo in 2009, Teddy has been a loyal servant emerging as the anchor man in the team’s midfield.

His fine performances earned him a place in the national football team Harambee Stars. He helped Kenya  bag the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup last year.

PIVOTAL PLAYER

The box-to box midfielder also helped Gor Mahia bag several honours in his five -year success-laden stint including the league trophy, two Domestic Cups as well as a Top Eight trophy.

His exit now leaves room for Erick Ochieng to flourish in a -two -man midfield with the dreadlocked Ugandan Godfrey ‘Baba’ Kizito.

In the meantime, Gor has insisted that it will not let its lead striker Dan Sserunkuma depart the club before the season ends.

The lethal goal poacher’s future has been the subject of intense  speculation with Tanzanian club Simba  and  South Africa’s Supesport United all being linked to him . Omondi was however adamant that “no club had made contact with Gor”.

“We can’t let Sserunkuma(Dan) go. He is a pivotal player and key to or plans,” he said.

The club is also still locked in negotiations with Bandari over the fate of Shaban Kenga. Kenga joined Gor in January on a six months loan deal and his parent club wants him back though the league champions are unwilling to let him go.

The exciting dribbler has of late been a maligned figure at K’Ogalo finding playing time hard to come by in coach Bobby Williamson’s new 3-5-2 formation but according to Omondi  “his heart  is with the league champion”.

The club also intends to bring on board three new faces to bolster the squad before the transfer window shuts. “We are not tinkering with the team, we just need little strengthening.”
