KCB beat Strathmore to keep title

A sudden-death penalty by KCB’s utility player Ken Moseti in second-half of added time saw the bankers beat Strathmore to retain the Great Rift 10-a-side rugby tournament title for the second year running yesterday

KCB beat a stubborn Strathmore 18-15 in a tense final of the main cup at the Nakuru Athletics Club.

Both sides drew  15-15 in normal time, taking the game into extra time but as the teams seemed headed for penalties, experienced Moseti who was a thorn in the Leos defence  booted a penalty from a difficult angle to send the Cutis Olago-coached side into a frenzy as the 25th edition of the tournament sponsored by Menengai Oil Refineries came to an end.

FIRST TRY

KCB scored the first try in opening stage of the game through Jacob Ojee but the bankers’ lead was short-lived as Leos’ Brian Mwangovia equalized with a superb try before Morris Mbai put the bankers on the driving seat with their second try.

The students scored their second try against the run of the play when Marvin Sumba evaded a harsh tackle to touch down. Moseti added KCB’s third try to put the scores at 15-10 but Mwangovia converted the third try for the Leos, taking the match to extra time.

Earlier in the semis, KCB beat Mean Machine from the University of Nairobi 5-0 while Strathmore  beat Homeboyz 7-5.

Kenya Cup champions Nakuru who were bundled out of the main cup in the quarter finals after losing 12-10 to Strathmore won the Plate final after beating Western Bulls 14-0. Kabras Sugar won their first title in the tournament when they beat Mwamba 10-0 to win the Bowl.

Masaku returned home with the Shield after a 21-0 win over Thika.

On Saturday, Kakamega High beat New Dawn 14-12 in a hotly contested final to retain  the schools title for the second year running. Kakamega, who finished the tournament without losing a match, scored two  tries through man-of-the match Rogasian Odhiambo, with Byron Odhiambo and Charles Hooker converting respectively.

New Dawn scored their two tries through Philip Oluoch and Boaz Wangila but the latter booted one of the conversions.

UNDER-12

In the Under-12 category, New Life won after amassing 15 points, with Nakuru RFC finishing second with 12 points ahead of Living Fountain (eight) and Kaptembwa (four). Comras won the Under-15 title after beating Baharini 25-0 but Bahari atoned for the loss, beating Top Fry 10-0 to lift the girls crown.
