What you need to know:

  • Kenya is placed 14th in the IRB World Series standings with 11 points and faces a tough battle to be in top 10 so as to avoid relegation next year.
  • Treu’s deputy Felix “Toti” Ochieng and attack coach Vuyo Zangqa will - in the mean time - take charge of the team. They will be assisted by former Kenya captain Humphrey Kayange.

Two Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) directors resigned Monday as the national team’s poor performance in the 2014/15 IRB World Sevens Series continues to claim casualties on and off the pitch.

Godwin Karuga and Maurice Masiga stepped down ahead of a crucial board meeting set for this morning.

Last week, head coach Paul Treu stepped down after a series of poor results. Treu signed off with a Bowl final performance at Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa at the weekend.

Karuga, who has been the Safaricom Safari Sevens tournament director for the past two seasons, was the director in charge of commercials while Masiga was a co-opted board member.

“With the current situation at the board, my continued stay is not tenable,” said Karuga in his resignation letter. “I have put in every effort from within to try and rectify the current situation, with little or no avail. The events of the past few weeks have made it clear that the situation is not improving.”

A source at KRU said clubs have started collecting signatures to push for a special general meeting early January “to force out the board”.

RANKING

Kenya is placed 14th in the IRB World Series standings with 11 points and faces a tough battle to be in top 10 so as to avoid relegation next year.

In the first two legs of the season, Kenya lost in the Shield finals of the Gold Coast and Dubai Sevens.

Treu’s deputy Felix “Toti” Ochieng and attack coach Vuyo Zangqa will - in the mean time - take charge of the team. They will be assisted by former Kenya captain Humphrey Kayange.

The new coach will have a hard time luring some of the senior players back as quite a number have secured professional deals outside the country.
Collins Injera and Lavin Asego are tied up with job commitments while Oscar Ouma and Horace Otieno are playing professional rugby in Sri Lanka. Biko Adema is recovering from injury.
