DAR ES SALAAM

Kakamega High School made a flying start at this year’s Brookside East Africa Secondary Schools championships with a 1-0 win over Rwanda’s Hanka TSS in a tough match at the Karume Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

The Green Commandos should have won the match by a bigger margin if not for several chances that they missed.

Kakamega should have taken the lead in the seventh minute but Ali Ahmed’s defence splitting pass was not put to good use by John Nzagah.

After a series of missed chances in the first half, Eric Ouma scored the match winner in the 55th minute from a goalmouth melee.

The other Kenyan representatives, Kisumu Day Secondary School, will play their first match on Monday morning against Nyerere of Tanzania while Kakamega High will return to the field for second match against Mvara from Uganda.

In girls’ basketball, defending champions Shimba Hills High School started strongly beating Kibuli Senior School from Uganda 56-42 in the opening match.

Shimba Hills started well with a basket from Esther Samba right at the start before Beril Akoth and Everlyne Oketch stretched the lead to 06-02.

Captain Sandua Amwana reduced the arrears for the Ugandans as Shimba Hills led 07-06 inside the first six minutes.

The Kenyan team later introduced Maria Komba for Lilian Adera, a change which worked as they went on to win the first quarter 12-10.

Shimba Hills outscored their opponents in the last three quarters for a comfortable victory.

SUPERIOR IN ALL DEPARTMENTS

Esther Samba scored a game high 19 points for Shimba Hills while Everlyne Atieno contributed 17 points.

Sauda Amwana top scored for the Ugandans with 18 points.

Shimba Hills coach Stanslaus Mangeni praised the girls for the positive display while his Ugandan counterpart Amed Among said they lost concentration in the second quarter and thereafter failed to recover.

The other Kenyan team, Tigoi Girls, were not as lucky losing 58-28 to St Mary’s Kitende.

Fielding among others former Tigoi Girls and Shimba Hills point guard Primrose Asura, St Mary’s were superior in all departments as they led throughout the encounter.

Jamila Nasikombi top the scoring for St Mary’s with 19 points while Maureen Nyapasi added eight points. Daisy Ayodi managed eight points for Tigoi.

“We did not play well generally and coupled with the poor officiating made it difficult for us to win,” Tigoi coach Peter Ochara said.

Shimba Hills will take on Lycee du lac Tanganyika from Burundi in their second game on Monday at 2pm while Tigoi will face Kizuka from Tanzania.

More than 3500 students are taking part at this year’s championships with Kenya and Tanzania fielding 643 and 600 athletes respectively.

Other participating countries are Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan and Zanzibar.

The week-long event is being hosted at six venues among them Duce, Karume Stadium and Police Training School.
