Kenya eye success on the beach

Captain Edna Rotich says the national women team will go all out to claim the top position at the Zone V All Africa Games Women Beach volleyball qualifiers that begin in Mombasa on Friday.

The Kenya Defence Forces attacker was last afternoon selected by coach Sammy Mulinge to lead Kenya’s charge at the two-day event. Also selected was Kenya Pipeline’s Gaudencia Makokha.

The duo will be supported by an experienced cast of Lucy Wangoi (Kenya Prisons) and Naomi Too (KCB) while Ruth Rop has been selected to manage the team.

“We only need to win a single game out of four to qualify but qualification is not our only target. The team wants to qualify in style” Rotich said.

“Our week-long residential training has been appropriate and am certain these preparations will see us through. I still expect Egypt and Rwanda to stretch us.” Mulinge added. Five nations namely hosts Kenya, alongside Egypt, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania will compete at this two day event that begins at the Jamboree Resort in Bamburi tomorrow morning.

Four of the participating teams are assured of qualification to the All Africa Games set for Congo Brazzaville in September.

The visiting teams are expected to start arriving in Mombasa this morning. The women team is hoping to join their male counterparts who qualified for the continental games after beating Egypt and Tanzania in the men qualifiers staged in Tanzania last month.
