Kenyan varsities find going tough at EA games

  • United States International University of Africa (USIU-A) lost 3-0 to the hosts in their opening football match while Kampala International University thrashed Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) 6-0 in another encounter.
  • In basketball, Kenya’s St Pauls University lost 54-15 to defending champions UCU with centre Desmond Owili scoring a game-high 14 points and Joseph Chuma adding 10 as the hosts barely broke sweat.

Kenyan universities posted mixed results in the opening day of action at the ninth edition of the East Africa University games at the Uganda Christian University (UCU) Main Campus in Mukono, Uganda.

Kenya lost in basketball, football and only won in lawn tennis as Ugandan universities stamped their dominance in the games on Wednesday.

United States International University of Africa (USIU-A) lost 3-0 to the hosts in their opening football match while Kampala International University thrashed Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) 6-0 in another encounter.

Paul Mucureezi staged a man-of-the-match performance setting up two goals   and scoring one to condemn USIU to defeat.  UCU’Ss other goals were scored by Hudson Apuda and Frank Wananda.

MMUST simply could not keep up with the pace of their opponents and fell behind in the second minute when Bright Haguma converted from the spot to give his team the lead.

Bashir Babu headed in the second goal in the 21st minute to give his team a 2-0 lead going into the breather.

Ibra Munywanyi drilled home the third in the 55th minute before Fahad Muhamad hit a brace in the 75th and 88th minutes. Emma Wasswa put the icing with a stoppage time goal.

Kenyatta University salvaged some pride for Kenya, beating Makerere University 4-0 in lawn tennis. Kenya will be looking for improved performances in hockey and rugby which begin today.
