Kwale County to fund Shimba Hills for regional games

Shimba Hills received a major boost on Sunday when the Kwale County government announced it will finance the schools’ preparations ahead of their East Africa girls’ basketball title defence in Tanzania next month.

Governor Salim Mvurya will meet Shimba Hills basketball and netball teams this week at his office this week to map out strategies and work out the logistics ahead of the championships in Dar es Salaam.

Shimba Hills hope to retain the basketball title they won last year in Lira, Uganda as they also eye their first regional netball title.

Mvurya, who spoke at Kwale High while opening this year’s Mombasa  regional  Term Two ‘B’ games, said: “The Kwale government is very proud of Shimba Hills who continue to market the county. We will do everything possible to ensure the team is well prepared and motivated ahead of the regional games.”

“Top sports personalities among them current Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho have visited out county in the past, just because of sports.”

Shimba Hills basketball and netball teams have been forces to reckon with for years now, both at the national and regional levels.

Over 20 girls from the school are in the United States after winning scholarships to study and play basketball. Kwale sports executive Patrick Mtsani was also present.
