Lady golfer Rutenbar tops in Kitale

  • Nganga Warui took the junior title on 40 points and the senior winner was Lyn Nicholls with 35 points. Mathew Githinji and Pauline Gachihi won the longest drive contest for the men and women.

Kitale’s lady golfer Hannah Rutenbar clinched the overall prize at last weekend’s Henry Ndemo Memorial tournament sponsored by Stella Kipsaita at the par-73 Kitale Club course.

The handicap 13 Rutenbar carded 41 points to beat Ben Cheruiyot, Richard Kiptum and Clara Chesire by three points. Philip Shiharsy, on 37, was fifth after beating Maria Litamoi on countback.

The event attracted a field of 100 golfers from Kitale, Eldoret and Nandi Bears. The event was aimed at creating awareness about Leukaemia. Kipsaita said the event would be held annually at the club.

Club professional Bhavi Shah conducted a golf clinic for children which also attracted a big number of children from Kitale area.

“I lost my son through leukaemia last year and I decided to stage this event to create an awareness about the disease,’’ said Kipsaita, a golfer herself. 

At Nyali Club, Julius Longei posted his best score so far, a total of 43 points to win the Kenya Association of Manufacturers/ Kenya Power tournament. He won by two points from men’s winner Tim Jensz while Keli Muindi (37) came second. Kibe Ngunje (36) was third.

The best score of the weekend was posted by lady winner Pauline Gachihi (40) who won by four points from Wambui Warui (36) after beating Lilian Krijnen on countback.

Imtiaz Zafar and Saleem Saeed won the first and second nines on 19 and 23 points. The staff prize went to Samson Wisuve (31) while M. Cheptumo (30) was second.

JUNIOR TITLE

Samson Wisuve won the nearest to pin. Samson Wisuve won the nearest to pin for the men and the ladies winner was Kellen Weku.

At Thika, Rose Ikenye posted nett 69 to win the ladies’ medal  ahead of Linda Kinyua 77 after a countback with Anne Mukiri. Francis Wangombe was the men’s winner with nett 67, beating Titus Burugu by a shot.

Betty Mutua won the ladies gross. Winning the men gross title with five over par 77 was David Matano. The senior men’s title went to L. Gachire on 71. The senior women’s winner was Margaret Njuguna (74).
