Lake Region hit Nzioia in primary football semis

  • Striker Samuel Michael of the Lake Region scored in the 16th and 73rd minutes before Billy Otieno added the third goal in the 80th minute. Salim Hamisi pulled one back for Nzoia in the 89th minute. 

Lake Region boys beat bitter rivals Nzoia from Western 3-1 in the semi-finals of the Kenya Primary School Sports Association football games in Kisumu on Tuesday.

Lake Region girls’ team also trounced Nzoia 1-0 in a hotly contested encounter.

The hosts will meet Nairobi’s Metropolitan in the finals at the Kisumu Polytechnic.

Metropolitan boy’s team made the finals after beating Nakuru 3-1 on the second day of the championships graced by the director of basic education Leah Rotich.

Striker Samuel Michael of the Lake Region scored in the 16th and 73rd minutes before Billy Otieno added the third goal in the 80th minute. Salim Hamisi pulled one back for Nzoia in the 89th minute. 

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE

Metropolitan scored their first two goals against Nakuru through Martin Nado in the 45th and 61st minutes before Stephen Oduor added another one in the 85th minute. Nakuru’s Kevin Laktano was on target in the 76th minute but it was too little too late.

In the girls’ category, Lake Region’s Eunice Auma scored the only goal against Nzoia four minutes from time. In the second match, it was Hellen Waywa’s goal that send  Metropolitan team to the finals.

The Lake region boys’ team had earlier qualified for the semis after humiliating Garissa Region 8-1.

The games chairman Joseph Koteli said they were forced to take some matches to Kisumu Day Secondary as the Kisumu Poly ground was waterlogged after heavy rains.

In netball, Nzoia which has collected nine points, will play against Lake Region which has six points in the first semi-final as Nakuru Region, which has nine points face off with Coast which has three points.

Earlier Lake had defeated Northern 27-03 in the first match before Nzoia also trounced them 34-04.

Lake in another match beat Aberdare 47-02 while Northern had edged Aberdare 18-08 in Pool A.

In Pool B Metropolitan humiliated Garissa 30-01 and Nakuru beat Metropolitan 24-12 before Nakuru again thrashed Garissa 18-03 while Coast trounced Garissa 21-04.

In the handball boy’s Lake will have a date with Nakuru today in the first semi before defending Champions Nzoia meet with Northern in the second semifinal.

In the girl’s category, it will be the defending champions, Nzoia against Coast and Lake against Nakuru.

The finals of the well-attended games will be staged today at Kisumu Polytechnic and Lions Secondary playfields.
