What you need to know:

  • The AIBA pro-boxing is keeping boxers on top form with the monthly outings which gives them the best chances of qualifying for Olympics through their continental events.

The Kenya Defence Forces middleweight boxer, Nick Abaka, lost his second professional fight yesterday to his Ecuador’s opponent, Delgado Suare, in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Ecuadorian won on a unanimous point decision. The loss has eliminated his chances of qualifying for the forthcoming 2016 Rio Olympics through AIBA pro-boxing as only the top two in each of the 10 weight categories will make to the Olympics.

Abaka has more professional fights ahead of him in the pre-ranking rounds expended to continue until March next year. There are eight boxers per weight, who will be ranked accordingly. Boxers have signed five-year contracts with AIBA pro-boxing.

Kenya Prisons’ welter-weight boxer, Rayton Okwiri, who won his professional debut last month is the only one who still has a chance to book a place in the Olympics.

MUST WIN

However, he must win two more fights. The Kenya Police bantamweight, Benson Gicharu, is on the same boat with Abaka as he also lost his opening fight in Argentina last month.

The AIBA pro-boxing is keeping boxers on top form with the monthly outings which gives them the best chances of qualifying for Olympics through their continental events.

Qualifiers for AIBA Olympics (AOB) Rio 2016 for Africa will take place in Yaounde, Cameroon. Africa has been allocated 30 slots, three boxers per weight.
Abaka is expected home today.
