Kenya Police bags boxing league title in Nakuru

Kenya Police were declared the overall winner of the National Boxing League that came to an end with the fifth and final leg at the Madison Square Garden in Nakuru on Saturday.

Police’s “Chafua Chafua” collected 105 points followed by KDF with 96 and Kenya Prisons 29.

They were followed by Coast (28), Kenyatta National Hospital (18), Kentrack (13), Central (8),  Nakuru (8), Kisumu Combine (6), Kibera (4), Metro (3), Oksa (3), Jericho (3), Eastern (1).

Twenty-eight-year-old Eric Otieno of Kisumu Combined put aside his clubs financial woes to win the middleweight contest.

EXPLOSIVE CONTEST

Otieno, who was the sole representative of the club in the tournament came, and without a coach, went on to beat Crispin Muremi of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) with a majority points verdict in an explosive contest.

“I was not sure of coming to Nakuru and my transport and accommodation was paid by my fellow boxers and I dedicate this victory to them,” said Otieno.

In this colourful contest, the hard-hitting Otieno cornered his anguished opponent on the ropes and unleashed a flurry of jabs on the face of the KDF fighter who appeared to have run out of ammunition.

Kenya Police top fighter Peter Mungai failed to climb the ring to face off with Matayo Keya of Kenyatta National Hospital due to a recurring injury.

Keya was declared the winner on technical knock-out.
